From Zagreb to the Pro Pickleball Circuit: The Rise of Domenika Turkovic
From college tennis courts to professional pickleball podiums, the journey of Domenika Turkovic is proof that talent, discipline, and passion can carve out a unique path in today’s rapidly growing sport.
Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Domenika has crafted an impressive transition into professional pickleball, positioning herself as one of the sport’s most promising emerging players.
Her athletic story began at the age of six when she first picked up a tennis racket. Years later, that dedication earned her a scholarship to Arizona State University (ASU), where she excelled both academically and athletically, completing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Sports Law and Business in 2023.
Alongside her doubles partner Patricija Spaka, Domenika climbed as high as No. 7 in the NCAA national doubles rankings. She was also a three-time NCAA doubles tournament participant and was honored by the ITA as the Most Improved Senior Player in the Southwest Region — recognition that reflected both her development and resilience at the collegiate level.

After graduating, Domenika set her sights on pickleball. Already serving as Head Pickleball Professional at Mission Hills Country Club, her tennis background provided a strong technical and tactical foundation for the transition into her new sport.
She played her first professional pickleball tournament in January 2024, and it didn’t take long for her to make an impact. Her breakout performance came at the APP Women’s Open in Columbus, where she captured silver — a result that confirmed she belonged on the professional stage.
More Than an Athlete
Domenika’s decision to compete professionally wasn’t driven solely by competition — it was part of her long-term vision. Earning the highest-level pickleball coaching certification requires first-hand experience on the professional tour, and tournament play became an essential step in that journey.
“Feeling that adrenaline again, that connection with the court — it made me fall in love with the sport all over again,” she shared in a recent interview.
That commitment paid off in multiple ways. Her continued presence on tour helped her secure a professional athlete visa in the United States, a key milestone that allowed her to keep building consistency and momentum.
In just over a year, Domenika has already competed in more than 90 professional matches — a testament to her dedication and her rapid growth within the sport.
An International Ambassador for Pickleball
While her family remains in Croatia, Domenika stays closely connected to her roots. Her story is already inspiring young athletes in her home country and beyond, especially women looking to build a future in a fast-growing sport like pickleball.
At just 24 years old, Domenika is focused on her next goals: improving her results in doubles, becoming a regular contender on the APP and PPA tours, and continuing to grow the pickleball community both on and off the court.
